| Fibrothetford Limited has built the
world's third poultry litter fired power station at Thetford in Norfolk.
The
plant burns over 400,000 tonnes of poultry litter per year, to produce 38.5MW of
electricity, enough for a town of around 67,000 homes. The plant is Europe's largest
producer of electricity from renewable sources, as well as the largest project to come to
fruition under the UK Government's Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation, which provides support for
renewable electricity generation.
The project incorporates lessons learnt in Fibrowatt's two previous poultry litter
fired plants, and demonstrates Fibrowatt's technology on a large scale.
CONSTRUCTION
The plant was designed and built for Fibrothetford by Taylor Woodrow Management and Engineering (TAYMEL),
part of the Taylor Woodrow Group. Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd was Owner's Engineer,
representing Fibrothetford during the engineering and construction of the plant.
Construction started in August 1996, and the plant started operating in October 1998. The
sub-contractors and equipment suppliers include Ansaldo Energia SpA for the turbine,
Foster Wheeler Ltd of Canada for the boiler, Detroit Stoker Inc. for the grate system and
Birtley Engineering plc for the fuel handling system.

FINANCE
The total cost of the project was £70 million. Bank of Scotland arranged the £57
million Project Financed Senior Debt facility and co-underwrote it with Westdeutsche
Landesbank Girozentrale. A further six banks joined the syndication of the Senior debt and
Marubeni Corporation of Japan provided a mixture of Junior and Subordinated debt.
Catamount Energy Corporation of Vermont, the
energy investment subsidiary of Central Vermont Public Service Corporation, is an equity
investor in the project. Catamount owns interests in five operating independent power
projects in the United States, three of which combust biomass in the electric generation
process. Catamount is also an equity investor in a gas-fired generation project under
construction in England.

NEIGHBOURHOOD
The plant is designed to have a low visual impact on the surrounding area, being
screened by trees on all sides. The boilerhouse has been sunk into the ground to ensure
that it does not exceed the height of the trees and the buildings have been painted dark
brown to match the forest background.
The power station is open to visits by local groups and educational parties, and
bookings can be made via the Visits Organiser on 01842 752255.
